1/2 cup shortening (it is lard not veg. shortening) 1 cup syrup plus 2 tbsp. sugar (if you had sugar, you could use 1 cup sugar) 1 cup applesauce 1/2 cup raisins 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 tsp. cloves 2 tsp. soda Little salt 2 cups flour or so
Can use 1 egg if you have some.
Bake 35 minutes, moderate oven.
Made specially in the war years and in the winter when the chickens didn't lay and sugar was rationed.
