1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 squares chocolate or 1/2 c. cocoa for milder flavor
1/2 c. flour
pinch of salt
1 c. walnuts or pecans
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar together. Add beaten eggs and blend well. Add melted chocolate or cocoa. Add salt and flour. Fold in chopped walnuts and flavoring. Bake in moderate oven (325) for 30 min. Out into squares. Bake in greased 8x8 pan, check at 20 min. Do not overbake.

From Edith: Imitation vanilla keeps its flavor better while baking than the real thing, but you should use more.
