4 C all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
3 T cold butter, cut in pieces
2 C buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients, work in the butter with your fingers. Add the buttermilk, stirring til dry ingredients are just moistened. Turn out on floured surface, knead 8 or 10 times. Form ball, put on baking sheet, cut a deep cross on the loaf top, dust top lightly with flour. Bake at 425 for 15 min, reduce heat to 375 and bake about 20-25 additional min. Makes on 9" loaf.
