Filling: 3/4 c.water, 3/4 c.finely chopped dates, 3/4 c.sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 3/4 c. chopped walnuts
Cookie dough: 3/4 c. butter, 11/2 c.sifted flour, 11/2 c. quick oatmeal, 1 c. brown sugar, 1 tsp. baking soda, 2 tsp. baking powder, 4 tbsp. milk(approx.)

Directions:

Filling: bring to a boil, water, dates, sugar, and vanilla...cook until mixture is thick, stirring frequently--add walnuts and cool.

Dough: Blend butter, flour, oatmeal, brown sugar soda, and baking powder to resemble a coarse meal. Add milk gradually, mixing lightly, but thoroughly with fork until dough is moist enough to roll. Gather into a ball, roll out on a well floured board to 1/8" thickness. Cut with round cookie cutter. Place heaping tspn of filling on one cookie round, cover with another round. Pinch closed along edges. Place cookies on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 375 approx. 15 minutes

This is a recipe passed on from memere and pepere. They would make dozens and dozens of these cookies every Christmas and store them until company came (mainly us six kids and families). Enjoy!
