heavy or whipping cream, chilled
pinch of salt
clean wooden stick (i.e.tongue depressor)

Directions:
Directions:
Take a jar with a tight fitting lid and fill it half full with the heavy or whipping cream. Add the clean wooden stick and tightly screw on the lid. Shake until the cream becomes thick. Keep shaking until a ball forms, drain off the extra liquid, add the salt and mix it in well. Refrigerate before serving if needed. Refrigerate remaining butter.

We used to bring these supplies on long road trips so that in the final hour of our trip, our kids were occupied with the excitement of knowing they were bringing something "fresh" to Grandma's holiday table. It kept their hands and brains engaged and it takes a lot of hands! I got this recipe from one of my favorite kindergarten teachers from work, Evelyn Irwin.
