1/2 c. shortening (half butter)
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 egg whites (slightly beaten)
3/4 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together thoroughly first 4 ingredients. Sift and stir together flour and salt. Roll into 1" balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg white mixture. Roll in finely chopped nuts. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 5 minutes at 375. Remove from oven & quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes or longer. Cool Place in thumbprints jelly or tinted confectioner's sugar icing.
