"The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found."--Calvin Trillin

When I was in the 7th grade I went to McDaniel Jr. High, it was at the west end of Main Street. Mama and Daddy "traded" at Lowe's Grocery Store, which was all the way at the far east end of Main Street and one block north on Woodard Street. Mama would give me a list of all she wanted...in the order of the grocery store rows. I would walk from school to Lowe's on Friday afternoons and get all her groceries. Daddy would pick me up when he got off work. She always said, "Now get a roast with not very much fat and not very much bone." Lowe's had a butcher at the back of the store behind the meat case. I would say, "Mama said...," and the butcher would say to me, "They don't make cows with no fat and no bones!" So I would take the roast he gave me.
It was the one meat purchase for the week, other than bologna and bacon. Mama would fuss or not when she saw it.
This was a family tradition. It started with me, then Margie, then Jeanie, and finally, Marsha.
