1 cup butter or margarine
11/2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
½ tsp. Salt
4 cups sifted cake flour
4 tsp. Baking powder
11/3 cups milk

Basic butter frosting:
6 Tbsp. butter or margarine
11/2 tsp. Vanilla extract
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
11/2 Tbsp. milk or cream

Butter cream decorating:
½ cup all purpose shortening
¼ cup butter or margarine
1 tsp. Lemon extract
3 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar

Beat butter until softened. Gradually add sugar, creaming until fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating thoroughly after each. Add vanilla extract and salt; beat well. Mix flour with baking powder; alternately add with milk to creamed mixture, beating thoroughly after each addition. Turn into a greased and floured 13x9x2- inch baking pan and spread evenly to edges. Bake at 350F about 45 minutes, or until top sprigs back when lightly touched. Cool in pan on rack 5 minutes. Turn out onto rack; cool completely. Cut out 3-inch squares from the two top corners of cake. Cut out 6x2 inch rectangles from the two corners of the lower section of cake, leaving the cake in the form of a cross. Frost and decorate as desired.

Basic Butter Frosting:
Cream butter with vanilla extract. Add confectioners’ sugar gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition. Stir in milk and beat until frosting is of spreading consistency. Makes about 2 cups.

Butter Cream Decorating Frosting:
Beat shortening, margarine, and lemon extract together in an electric mixer bowl. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until frosting will hold the shape of a tube design. Makes about 2 cups.
