3/4 cup shortening (butter)
1 cup dark brown sugar (can use light if desired)
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses (preferably dark)
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/4 cups flour
2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, add sugar gradually, cream thoroughly. Blend in beaten egg and molasses. Sift together all dry ingredients. Mix well. Set in fridge to chill, one hour or more. Shape in balls, dip in granulated sugar. Place on cookie sheet about 3" apart. Bake 12-15 min. at 375º. Watch carefully as they burn easily. (You can flatten with the bottom of a glass cup or criss cross with a fork if desired.)
