1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp cocoa
1 1/2 c sugar
1/2 c butter
2 eggs
2 tbsp red food coloring
1 c buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp baking soda

Frosting: 1/4 c Crisco, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 c milk, 3 c powdered sugar.

Combine crisco, salt vanilla and 1/3 of the sugar. Beat well. Add milk and remaining sugar; beat until smooth.
(Cream Cheese Frosting is also great)

Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter till fluffy; add sugar and beat till light and fluffy; add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add vanilla extract and beat until combined.

Combine flour, salt and cocoa powder. Whisk together buttermilk and red food coloring. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk, in 3 additions, beginning and ending with flour.

In a small cup combine the vinegar and baking soda. Allow to fizz then quickly fold into the cake batter.

Working quickly, divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans and smooth tops. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
