1 c. sugar (1 1/2 c.)
1/2 c. butter (3/4 c.)
2 eggs, yolks & whites separated (3 eggs)
2 oz. chocolate, melted & cooled slightly (3 oz. or 1 & 1/2 squares)
1/3 c. bread flour, sifted before measuring (scant 2/3 c.)
1 tsp. vanilla (same)
1/8 tsp. salt (1/4 tsp.)

Sift sugar. Beat butter until soft and add the sugar gradually. Blend until they are creamy. Beat in egg yolks. Melt chocolate carefully in the microwave or over hot water. Beat in cooled melted chocolate. Sift flour and add to the butter mixture. Add vanilla.
Whip until stiff 2 egg whites and 1/8 tsp. salt. Fold them into the batter. Bake in a greased 8 1/2 inch pie plate in a slow oven 325 for about 30 minutes. (45 minutes for the 10".) Serve the pie topped with ice cream and Mom's chocolate sauce.

This was always Carol's birthday dinner request.
It came from the 1931-46 Joy of Cooking. Mom wrote in the margin 1 1/2 times the recipe so I put that in parenthesis. I'm sure that was for a 10" pie plate.
