1/2 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 oz red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
3 Tbsp cocoa
1 tsp salt
2 cups cake flour
1 Tbsp vinegar

5 Tbsp flour
1 cup milk
1 cup white sugar
2 cakes of butter
1 tsp vanilla

Make a paste of food coloring, cocoa, and vanilla. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add flour and salt alternately with buttermilk. Add paste and beat. Mix soda with vinegar (will foam). Add to batter very quickly. Bake at 350 in 9" pans for 30 minutes.

To make icing: Cook flour and milk until forms a thick paste. Cool. Beat sugar and butter together until fluffy. Mix together with paste. Add vanilla.
