1/2 cup Crisco shortening
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts optional
1/2 cup tiny chocolate chips optional

Directions:

Preheat oven 350
Cream shortenings and sugars; add egg and vanilla blend well. Sift dry ingredients together and nuts and or chocolate chips add to creamed mixture. Blend well.
Shape into walnut-sized balls, dip tops in colored sugar. Arrange on greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. cook 10-12 minutes.

Colored Sugar: To make your own colored sugar put a few tablespoons of sugar in a zip lock bag. Add food coloring a drop at a time to the sugar and shake the bag. Add sugar and food coloring until you have the amount you want and the color you want.
