1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
2 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt ( the recipe did not say how much)
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream the sugars with the butter and shortening. Add the egg and vanilla. Mix the flour,salt and baking soda together. Add to the sugars and butter mixture. Add 1/2 c. flour at a time.

Roll into balls, and dip in sugar, flatten a little with fingers. Place on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 to 15 minutes.

These are really good. The recipe came from Grandpa Champlin's cousin Helen Hamilton from Cresco, Iowa. She also made the best donuts in the world.
