1 1/2 to 2 dark green watermelons
3 1/2 lbs. sugar
1/2 tsp. oil of cloves
1/2 tsp. oil of cinnamon
1 pint vinegar

"I believe the watermelons are called Diamond.
Remove all of the pink from the watermelons and cut the rind into squares. Boil until soft as you do potatoes. Drain. Place in a crock.
The oils are available at a drugstore.
Mix the sugar, oils and vinegar and bring to a boil.
She said she usually doubled that part of the recipe. Pour over watermelon. Let stand overnight. Drain liquid and boil it again. Repeat this procedure for three days. Then boil it all, pickles too and put into sterilized jars and seal."
