Ingredients:
2 c. warm water
2 pkgs. yeast
2 T. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1 T. shortening
5-3/4 c. sifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in water. Add sugar, salt, shortening and 3 c. flour. Beat until smooth and shiny. Stir in 2 1/2 c. more flour and stir until mixture leaves side of bowl. Turn out on the 1/4 c. remaining flour on board. Knead dough for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Let rise in greased bowl until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour).
Punch down. Divide dough into halves, shaping each ball under hands to form a long slender loaf, tapering ends. Twist the loaf to get out air bubbles or place on greased cookie sheet 4-in. apart and slash with sharp knife diagonal gashes 3/4 in. deep and 1 1/2 in. apart. Let rise until double in bulk. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes.
