1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. butter flavoring
1 (2 1/2 oz.) bottle red food coloring
3 tbsp. cocoa
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tbsp. vinegar

NO COOK ICING:
1 lb. powdered sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 tbsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp butter flavoring
5 tbsp. milk

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flavorings. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and blend in. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately with buttermilk. Add the vinegar to last half of buttermilk. Beat only until smooth. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8 or 9 inch cake pans for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees or until tester comes out clean. Cool pans for 10 minutes.
Remove cake from pans. Cool completely before icing.

NO COOK ICING:
Sift powdered sugar. Blend well about 1/2 sugar with shortening, flavorings, and salt. Alternately add rest of sugar and enough milk to get a smooth spreading icing.
