1 C pitted Dates, chopped
1 C Hot Water
1 tsp Baking Soda
2/3 C Shortening
1 C Sugar
2 unbeaten Eggs
1 3/4 C Flour
2 T Cocoa
1 tsp Vanilla
1 C Semi Sweet Chocolate Pieces
1/2 C chopped Nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix hot water, dates, and soda and set aside to cool. Cream sugar with Crisco until fluffy. Drain water from dates but reserve for next step. Alternately add reserved water and flour to sugar mixture. Add remaining flour last. Add vanilla, chocolate pieces, nuts. Fold in dates. Bake 40 minutes in moderate oven at 350. This cake needs no frosting and stays moist for several days.

This is a recipe of my Grandmother Colby's. My mother also used to make this cake and it was a favorite of my brother Alan's.
