Cream Butter and Sugar until light and fluffy. Ad eggs, vanilla, baking powder, salt a beat well. Add flour 1 cup at a time and mix until just incorporated. Dough may be rolled into logs, wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the freezer. Just take out of the freezer and slice 1/8 inch thick. Bake on greased cookie sheet @ 350 for 10 - 12 minutes. Cool before icing. Dough can also be rolled out on a floured surface and cut into shapes.

Personal Notes:
Sometimes Mom would add the zest of an orange to the dough. These are a tender crisp cookie, not a soft one, but they do soften when iced. You can sprinkle with sugar before baking but they are best with boiled icing. See Basic Fondant Recipe.
