1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla
1 2/3 c. flour
1 egg
1 t. soda
1/4 t. salt
1/2 c. nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cover dates with boiling water and let cool. Cream shortening and sugar together, add vanilla and egg and beat well. Sift flour, salt and soda. Add alternately with dates and water--a little at a time. Beat well. Add nuts. Bake in a well-grease and floured tube pan. Also can be baked in a loaf pan or 8x8x2 inch square pan. Bake about 1 hour in 350 oven.
