1 pkg (4ounces) German sweet chocolate
1/2 c boiling water
1 c margarine or butter
2 c sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
2 c plus 4 tbsp sifted cake flour
1 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 c buttermilk
4 egg whites stiffly beaten
CHOCOLATE - PECAN FROSTING
1 c evaporated milk
1 c sugar
3 egg yolks slightly beaten
1/2 c margarine or butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/3 c (about) angel flake coconut
1 c chopped pecans

Directions:
Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool - Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition. Add vanilla and melted chocolate. Mix until blended. Measure sifted flour, soda and salt and sift together. Then, add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until batter is smooth. Fold in egg whites. Pour batter unto three 8 or 9 inch pans lined on bottom with wax paper. Bake in 350 oven for 35 to 40 minutes for 8 inch pans or for 30 to 35 minutes for 9 inch pans. Cool.
FROSTING:
Combine milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla in a saucepan. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened---about 12 minutes. Remove from heat. Add coconut and pecans. Beat until cool and thick enough to spread.
