1 pint scalded milk (2 cups).
1/2 c. butter,
3/4 c. sugar,
1 tsp. salt,
6 cups flour,
1 egg,
1 oz. compressed yeast ( or one packet),
Grated rind on 1/2 lemon

Topping: Core, cut and peel 10 to 12 apples. Melt 1 stick butter and pour over apples. Add sugar and cinnamon to taste

Warm bowl and flour. Crumble yeast in a cup with a tsp. of sugar and 1/2 c. scalded milk cooled to lukewarm. Let stand in warm place to rise. To the rest of the milk add butter, sugar, salt, grated lemon and a little nutmeg. When lukewarm add beaten egg. Stir in yeast and some flour and only enough more to knead until smooth and elastic. Cover closely and let rise until double. Cut and form dough into any desired shape about 1/2 inch thick and place in pans . Add topping and let rise again until double. Bake 15 minutes or more at 350 until golden brown.
