Birthday Cake Recipe

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter at room temperature
4 eggs, separated
1 cup milk
3 cups all purpose flour
1 t. vanilla
pinch salt
3 t. baking powder

While cake is baking make the following icing:

1 stick softened butter
1 box powdered sugar
coconut (optional)

Cream the butter and half the sugar together. Add the rest of the sugar alternately with milk until the right consistency for spreading. Cover iced cake with coconut if desired.

Beat butter and sugar together until light and smooth. Stir in well beaten egg yolks ad beat until very light. Sift dry ingredients together three times and add to the butter and sugar aleternately with the milk. Add vanilla.
Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into batter. Grease and flour three 8" cake pans. Pour batter into each equally and bake at 350F until done.
