2 large salt herring
1/2 c. vinegar
1/2 c. water
1 onion, sliced
2 T. sugar
2 tsp. whole pepper
3 bay leaves

Directions:
Directions:
Remove skin and bones from herring and cut into 1 1/2 inch lengths. Rinse in cold water. Combine vinegar, water and sugar and bring to a boil; add spices and pour over herring. Refrigerate several hours before using.
