3/4 c. flour
1 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate

Directions:
Directions:
Combine, blend; then beat at medium speed until well blended. Spread half of the batter into a greased pan.

To remaining batter, blend in 1 oz. unsweetened chocolate. Spread carefully over light batter. Bake at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes.

Chocolate icing for brownies (optional)
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate
2 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. milk
1 c. powdered sugar

Melt together chocolate, butter, and milk. Stir in powdered sugar, adding more milk if necessary.
