1 c. regular oats
1 1/2 c. water, boiling
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda

6 T. butter
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1 c. nuts, chopped
1 c. coconut
1 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 350.

In a small bowl, pour boiling water over oats and let stand for 20 minutes. Set aside. Using an electric mixer and large bowl, cream sugars and shortening.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir dry ingredients together in a separate bowl and then add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Add cooled oats last. Pour into 9 x 12 pan and bake at 350 for 35 - 40 minutes.

To Make Topping: Melt butter and add other ingredients and mix together in a saucepan. Pour topping over cake when it is done and place under slow broiler long enough to brown coconut. Let cool before serving.
