1/4 c. butter or shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening or butter over low heat. Add brown sugar. Add egg. Sift together and stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in vanilla and nuts. Spread in well-greased 8 inch square pan. Bake @ 350 for 20-25 minutes. Cut into bars while still warm. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired. May double recipe and put in 13" x 9" pan.
