2 cups pitted, chopped dates
1 cup plus 1 T. all purpose flour
3/4 finely chopped walnuts
1 cup of water
1 t. vanilla
1 t. baking soda
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups quick cooking oatmeal
1/2 cup butter or margarine, soften

Directions:
Directions:
1- In a sauce pan add dates, which have been tossed with 1 tablespoon of flour.
Add water and simmer for 10 minutes or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let cool. Set aside
2- In large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, brown sugar, oats and butter. On low speed, blend all ingredients together. On medium, beat ingredients very well.
3- Grease a 13" X 9" x 2" baking pan. Spread half of the oat mixture into pan, pat flat with spatula or hand. Spread date mixture on top of oats. Place remainder of oats mixture on top of dates.
4- Bake in preheated oven 375 F for 20 minutes. Let cool in pan on a rack. Cut onto squares when cool.
