2 cups shortening (half butter or 1 teaspoon butter flavoring)
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs, beaten
5 cups flour, add 1/2 cup more
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 teaspoons soda
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs and beat well. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. Chill. Roll into balls, dip in sugar and flatten with glass. Bake at 350 until just beginning to brown.
