1 cup sugar 1/4 cup shortening 1 egg 1/4 cup cocoa 1/4 cup hot water 1/2 cup sweet milk 1/2 teaspoon soda 1 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream sugar and shortening; add egg and beat well. Dissolve cocoa in 1/4 cup hot water; beat to a smooth paste and add to creamed mixture. Add milk and vanilla. Add soda to flour and sift 3 times. Add to mixture and beat well. Bake in 350º oven until cake springs back.
