2 c. white vinegar
1 3/4 c. sugar
2 tsp. whole allspice
1 1/2 tsp. whole pepper
6 bay leaves
8 whole cloves
4 tsp. mustard seed

Directions:
Directions:
1. Skin fish, except smelt, and cut into chunks. Cover with 4 c. water and 1 c. pickling salt. Let stand 48 hr.

2. Wash fish and cover with white vinegar. Let stand 24 hr.

3. Drain fish and put into jars with onion slices.

4. Add above ingredient, bring to a boil and pour over fish and refrigerate. Ready to eat in about 1 1/2 weeks.
