2 c. water
1/2 c. salt
Combine and boil until dissolved. Add food coloring.
2 T. cooking oil
2 T. alum
2 c. flour

Directions:

Mix all ingredients into water/salt while very hot.
Knead until smooth.

This recipe came from my childhood friend/neighbor Sue Crosby. I made this numerous times w/ my kids when they were small. I bought cheap cookie cutters that they could use to cut out shapes of animals.
