2 c. flour 1 tsp. ginger 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 c. sugar 4 T. (about 1/4 c.) molasses 3/4 c. shortening 1 egg 1 tsp. baking soda
Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and nutmeg. Mix sugar, molasses, shortening, and egg. Mix these two mixtures together and add baking soda. Shape dough into balls and then roll balls in sugar. Bake @ 375º about 12 minutes. May take less time depending on how large the balls. Or a bit longer if you want to make them big.
These were one of my Dad Verne's favorites. They are yummy just as they are or dunked in coffee. My Dad use to say he liked his coffee best when it was so hot that you could only sip it! I remember my Mom filling his thermos every morning with fresh coffee for him to take to work.
