5 cups self-rising flour (sift twice) 1 tsp. soda 4 tbsps. sugar 2 pkgs. yeast (1/4 cup of lukewarm water) 1 cup Crisco 2 cups buttermilk
Mix yeast in ¼ cup lukewarm water until yeast dissolves. Combine all other ingredients and add to yeast. Handle dough as little as possible. Put on floured surface. Pat out with hands (Do not use a rolling pin.) Cut out with biscuit cutter and fold over with a pat of butter inside. Bake at 400° for approximately 10 minutes.
Egg substitute: For use in baking, before starting a recipe, combine 1 tsp. unflavored gelatin with 3 tbsp. cold water and 2 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. boiling water. This mixture can substitute for 1 egg in a recipe.
