1/2 c. Crisco solid shortening
3 c. sugar

1/2 tsp salt
1 c. milk

Directions:
Cream together first 4 ingredients. Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Add these dry ingredients alternately with the milk, beginning with flour and ending with flour. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. Grease and flour tube pan or smaller loaf pans. (Mother always cut wax paper to place in the bottom of the pans to assure the cake came out well.) Begin baking in cool oven. Bake for 2 hours at 300. Place a toothpick in the center to test for doneness. Do not overbake!

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
MY personal favorite! This was my grandmother's recipe originally. She was my mother's mother, Cliffie Smith Edge, and we grandchildren called her "Mama Kip". She was a tiny, stout, quiet little lady with an awesome presence. It was Cliffie and Garnett Winchester Edge who settled in Doerun in 1910, and built the old homeplace. My mother was born in that home in 1918, and stills lives there today, 90 years later!
