Directions:
Directions:
Cut fat off hams; cut large pieces of ham and put to boil (if there is a bone, include). While the ham is boiling, prepare other ingredients. Take ham out to cool and add all other ingredients except carrots and potatoes. Cook until sausages are well done. Add carrots and potatoes and boil until tender. Add the wedges of cabbage just before serving. This stew tastes better if it sits overnight.

Personal Notes:
I have made potaje it only a few times because the ingredients are so expensive. An absolutely GREAT soup for a cold night. However, I have served it here in the tropics and nobody gave up the ghost. As a matter of fact, years after the dinners of potaje, my friends remember this delicious soup.
