1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 c. sour or buttermilk
1 t. soda
1/2 t. salt
1 t. vanilla
3 1/2 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, brown sugar and eggs thoroughly.
Stir in milk; sift together flour, soda and salt and stir in.
CHILL 1 HR. AT LEAST.
Drop t. about 2" apart on lightly greased sheet.
Put date filling on top and then cover with more dough.

Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 min.

DATE FILLING-
2 c. dates in small pieces
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. water
Cook together slowly, stirring constantly, until thickened. Cool!
