1 2/3 c. Gold Medal flour (regular or Wondra)
1 1/2 c. sugar
2/3 c. Hershey's cocoa
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. Crisco shortening
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs

Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour 2 round layer pans, 8 or 9 inch, or 13x9x2 in. oblong pan. In large mixer bowl combine all ingredients. Blend on low speed 30 seconds, scraping sides and bottom of bowl. Beat 3 minutes on medium speed, scraping bowl frequently. Pour into prepared pan(s). Bake layers 30 to 35 minutes, oblong 35 to 40 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in center of cake come out clean.
