1 c. self-rising cornmeal mix
1/2 c. self-rising flour
1 T. sugar
1 large egg
1/2 c. milk or beer
1/2 c. diced onion
1/2 c. chopped green bell pepper (optional)
1 jalapeño pepper, chopped
Vegetable oil

Directions:
Directions:
Combine first 3 ingredients in a large bowl, and make a well in the center of the mixture.
Combine egg and next 4 ingredients, stirring just until moistened
Pour oil to a depth of 3 inches into a Dutch oven or large sauce-an and heat to 375º.
Drop batter by rounded tablespoonfuls into hot oil and fry in batches 2 min. on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels: serve immediately
