1 pkg. yeast
2 tbsp. warm water
1 cup shortening (I use butter flavored crisco)
5 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
2 cups buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Cut shortening into flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda with blade on Kitchen aid mixer until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in buttermilk and yeast mixture until dough leaves the sides of the bowl (dough will be soft and sticky) Turn dough onto generously floured surface. Gently roll in flour to coat; shape into a ball and knead lightly 25 to 30 times, sprinkle with flour if dough is too sticky. Roll or pat out to 1/2 to 3/4 inch thickness. Cut with a 2 to 21/2 inch round cutter. Place on an ungreased jelly roll pan (four across and 6 down) Cover and let rise in a warm place until double. 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Bake until golden brown 12 to 14 minutes. Immediately remove from jelly roll pan.
