3/4 c finely chopped nuts
1/4 c. soft shortening
14 c. soft butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk/ 1 egg white, separated
1/2 t. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/4 t. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, butter, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla. Add flour and salt. Roll in balls. Beat egg white slightly. Dip balls in egg white and then in nuts. Place 1 in. apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake 5 mins. in 375 oven.
Remove and make thumbprint in middle of each cookie. Bake 8 mins. longer.
Frost with colored frosting. (Some red, some green for Christmas)

Mom always made a double batch and said if in a hurry add the
whole egg to the batch with a little more flour and nuts at end to
batch. They taste the same.
