CAKE BATTER:
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. Bottle of Red Food Coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. white vinegar
FROSTING:
3 Tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup butter

Preheat oven to 350
Grease & flour (2) 8 inch cake pans.
CAKE BATTER:
In large bowl cream shortening & sugar; beat till light & fluffy. Mix in eggs. In small bowl; mix food coloring, cocoa & vanilla. Add to creamed mixture. Pour buttermilk and salt together. Add alternately with flour. In small bowl mix baking soda with white vinegar. Stir this into creamed mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Cool cakes on rack.
FROSTING:
Cook flour & milk in small saucepan until thick; stirring often. Watch bottom of pan so this does not scorch. Set aside and let cool completely. Cream sugar, vanilla & butter till light & fluffy. Fold in cooled flour mixture in thirds, whipping until very light and fluffy after each addition. Ice on cooled cakes.
