1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, sift before measuring
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups raisins, chopped
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening; add sugar and eggs one at a time; beat until light. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg; add to creamed mixture. Fold in raisins and nuts; mix well.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.
Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes.

Makes about 4 dozen Hermit cookies
