Sauce: (Make first)
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon orange rind, grated
1 cups orange juice, fresh

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter, softened
4 eggs
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
1 - 2 teaspoon orange rind, grated
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 pound dates, chopped (chop dates, the already chopped dates do not work as well); mix with flour
1 cup nuts, chopped

Mix together sugar, orange rind and orange juice. Set aside, stirring occasionally. Let stand while cake is baking.

Mix together sugar, butter and eggs; add buttermilk. Mix flour and soda. Gradually add egg mixture, working out lumps. Add orange rind. Add dates and nuts. Bake at 350 in a well-greased and floured tube pan for 1 hours.
Prick holes in hot cake; pour sauce over cake.
