cup chopped nuts
1 cup chopped dates
1 teaspoons baking soda
teaspoons salt
cup shortening
cup boiling water
2 eggs
teaspoons vanilla
1 cup sugar
1 cups sifted all-purpose flour

Directions:
Directions:
Combine nuts, soda, and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the shortening and boiling water. Allow this mixture to stand for 15 minutes. Stir to blend. Beat eggs slightly, add vanilla. Stir in sugar and the sifted flour. Add to date mixture. Do not over-mix. Place in greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour at 350. Insert toothpick in center and it should come out clean. Loosen sides with spatula. For perfect slicing, allow to cool for several hours.
