"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1-5.5oz bar Fels Naphtha Soap (or other bar soap if this brand unavalible)
4 c. Water
3 gal. Hot Water
2 c. Washing Soda (in a yellow box, looks like a big box of Baking Soda)
1 c. Borax
c. regular Dawn or c. Ultra Dawn

Directions:
Directions:
Grate one bar of Fels Naphtha soap, mix with 4 c. water and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until all the grated soap is grated soap is dissolved. (DON"T let it come to a boil)

Pour into a 5-gal. bucket and add three gallons of hot water straight from the tap. Stir until dissolved then stir in washing soda (more if you have hard water), borax and Dawn. Mix well, Then leave overnight to set up into a gel. Stir before using. Use 3/4 c. for a top loading machine and 3/8 c. for a front loading machine. Adjust as needed. Larger machines or heavily soiled load may require a bit more.
After it sets overnight we fill old liquid detergent bottles 3/4 full for easier use. (about 4 bottles) You will want to shake before each use. (make sure the lid is on tight!) This does look rather disgusting but it works great. Also know it is very low sudsing - but... still works great!

Personal Notes:
Yes, we really do use this. We have used it for well over 2 years and hate to run out and have to use something from the store. I find all my ingredients at our local discount grocery store.
