"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup milk
4 cups blackberries
1 cup sugar
3 cups boiling water

Cream together butter and sugar. Add flour, salt, baking powder and milk and mix well. Put into a large baking pan, then pour in the following in this order: berries, sugar, 3 cups boiling water.
Bake at 350 until top is golden brown. Will take about 50 minutes.
This is also excellent with mangoes or peaches, you may add some lemon juice if your mangoes or peaches are not tart.
