2 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup butter or oleo
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 each 2oz jar maraschino cherries
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 Tbls softened butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup coconut(optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Mix flour, sugar and butter until crumbly. Press into ungreased 13x9x2 inch pan. Bake for 20 minute's, or until crust is lightly browned. Blend together eggs, brown sugar, salt, baking powder and vanilla. Drain and chop cherries, reserving liquid. Stir chopped cherries and walnuts into blended mixture. Spread on top of baked crust. Return to oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool in pan on rack. Combine softened butter and powdered sugar with enough cherry liquid to spread. Spread on cookies; sprinkle with coconut if desired. When icing has set, cut into 2 by 1 inch bars.

I have made these goodie bars for several years at Christmas. If you make 2 batches, you can use red cherries in one and green cherries in the other. Very pretty for Christmas and very good.
