Cream together:

1/3 cup soft shortening
1/3 cup sugar

Add and stir well:

1 egg
2/3 cup dark molasses
3/4 cup sour milk, buttermilk, or yogurt

Sift into moist ingredients:

1 cup sifted whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup wheat germ
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt

Combine ingredients with no more than 20 strokes. Oil ring mold, or 8 inch square loaf pan and dust with flour. Pour batter into pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Do not over bake.
