1-1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1-1/4 t. soda
2/3 c. buttermilk
2 eggs, unbeaten
1-1/4 c. sugar
3/4 t. salt
2/3 c. Crisco
1 t. vanilla
1/2 c. sour milk (or buttermilk)

Boiled Icing:
1 c. sugar
1 T. light corn syrup
2 egg whites
1/3 c. water
1/2 t. salt
1 t. vanilla
Chocolate Icing
1 stick margarine
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 t. vanilla
1/2 c. cocoa

Cake: Sift together cake four, sugar, cocoa, salt and soda. Add Crisco, buttermilk, vanilla. Beat on 3 speed for 2 minutes. Add sour milk and 2 eggs. Beat 2 more minutes. Pour into 3 greased and floured cake pans and cook in 350 oven for about 30 minutes. Cool and frost.

Boiled Icing: boil sugar, water, syrup and salt slowly until syrup spins a foot-long thread. Meanwhile, beat 2 egg whites until stiff. Add a teaspoon of vanilla. Pour syrup mixture over egg whites and beat until firm enough to spread on layers.

Chocolate Icing: Mix ingredients together. Bring to a boil and boil for one minute. Remove from heat and beat until cool.
